New Zealand
Cycling in the Land of the Long White Cloud
New Zealand, Paradise of the Pacific, is a country of stunning natural beauty. Join John Hazen as he cycles 1700 miles; around the countryside of South Island, up to the capital of Wellington, and into the environs of North Island.
Hazen cycles this sparsely populated country (4.5 million), about the size of California, visiting Oamaru, the Port Townsend of NZ; Dunedin, located within the remnants of an extinct volcano; and four days on the 150-kilometer Otago Central Rail Trail with its rugged scenery, country pubs, and historic gold-mining villages. After taking in the incredible scenery of Haast Pass in the Mount Aspiring National Park area, Hazen jumps the ferry to the North Island and takes on the physically challenging hills around North Cape, has an unexpected altercation with a parked truck in Papamoe, and comes to terms with the “Suicide Highway” back to Manukau.
