Touring Dublin and Eastern Ireland

Ireland video 20:03
ireland - history    15:27
Dublin, the capital city of The Republic of Ireland, has been home to the early Celts, Vikings, and kings and queens. Jim Conway delves into the early history of the city and contrasts it with the countryside and city of Dublin today.

Conway takes us on a historical walkabout to Christ Church Cathedral, standing at least from 1030 AD; Trinity College, founded in 1592, housing Ireland’s finest national treasure, the Book of Kells, believed to have been created around 800; and Kilmainham Gaol, a former prison, now a memorial to the 1916 Easter Rebellion. Explorations into the surrounding countryside include Glendalough, a sixth-century monastic settlement; Kilkenny, a medieval town; and Malihide, known to have been a Viking settlement, these days a contemporary town and winner of the 1990 Irish Tidy Towns Competition.
