CYCLING AUSTRIA
Only slightly smaller than Maine, Austria is a spectacular mountainous country bordered by eight countries, including Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Italy. Bicycle with Chet and Lynn Rideout as they tour 400 miles in Austria and Germany with their friend Piero Tassinari.
Rideout takes us from Innsbruck, the cultural and economic center of western Austria, along the Inn River Cycleway to Passau. Here the Inn joins with the Danube and Ils Rivers; their combined flows caused serious floods in Passau and a number of other Austrian towns last June, and the effects are still evident. The adventure continues along the mighty Danube, with visits to the great historical centers Linz and Vienna on the Danube Cycleway.
The Danube Trail attracts 300,000 visitors yearly and, quite obviously, provides an enormous economic boost in this area; Rideout feels we would experience the same type of benefit if we improved, linked, and extended bike trails in America also.
